Bulletproof Pinterest strategy: grow your traffic in no time
The basics of Pinterest marketing
Pinterest is a platform where you can create your profile and make various boards related to different topics. Afterward, you can pin your own or other people content to these boards.
The beauty of Pinterest is the fact that all content is evergreen. Not like it’d be on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter, on Pinterest what you’ve pinned a year or five ago can appear on someone’s timeline tomorrow.
Pinterest shows you the latest pins from people you follow and relevant accounts based on your interests and your own pins.
You can also create and join group boards – boards where several people are pinning on one board. This gives you an easy option to reach a way bigger audience than your own!
How I got to my first Pinterest followers & you can too
Right now, I’m at 9K Pinterest followers, with around 220K monthly viewers. So here are a few steps I took to get here!
Before getting started…
- Make sure to start a Business account. This will give you access to stats and other useful features.
- If you have an existing Pinterest account, either make Secret the boards that are not relevant to your business or create a separate account for your business needs.
- Don’t worry about follower numbers as much. What matters is the impressions and viewers. How to get them – read below.
STEP #1: Write an amazing content
Let’s start with the basics! Having an AMAZING content on your blog is a must!
This bulletproof Pinterest strategy will be effective as long as you’re actually sharing valuable content. The one and the only way to build a powerful blog hides within the content. So work on that before you go any further.
Here are a few tips on how you can improve your blog posts.
STEP #2: Create outstanding pins
Next up in the bulletproof Pinterest strategy: vertically long graphics are a must. Standard 4:3 size (horizontal) is disappearing on Pinterest. Create vertical graphics to get more attention and be visible!
That’s also another great way to get more attention and gather more Pinterest followers. Read more about what type of pins will attract the most attention.
How to create a successful design?
First of all, research what’s happening on Pinterest now. You’ll notice some patterns that are repeated. For example,
- bright and noticeable colors or some color elements;
- clearly understandable text;
- 1-2 fonts used;
- fonts are bold and easy to read;
- photos are relevant and interesting;
- images drive attention and get the interest.
After doing some initial research for some of the most popular Pinterest graphics, it’s time to choose your direction. You don’t have to do all the same or use all of these elements in one graphic. Create 2-3 options for yourself with different variations and see which one works the best!
For graphics creation, you can use Canva.com, Photoshop, the heck with that – even Paint! Or you can get a designer to help you.
You just have to make sure that graphics are visually appealing. Many of even the most popular Pinterest graphic designs are not professionally made on any level but they still are elegant and get the necessary attention!
AN IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER: It’s okay to NOT stand out
If you see many similar Pinterest graphics – it’s for a reason. Actually, Pinterest search engines work not only with written keywords but also with photos. Meaning, your pin might show up along with similar pins. Therefore, if the biggest bloggers in your niche use handwritten font & pink color, go for that goddamn choice!
Of course, it’s important to keep it relevant to your brand. Don’t ditch all of your branding just because of Pinterest. But do find a path in between that combines the popular & unique.
STEP #3: Add pin-it buttons to your website images
Creating vertical pins won’t get you anywhere unless you learn how to boost your conversions. Pin-it button is one of the best and easiest ways to let your followers know – this should go to Pinterest, PIN IT!
It’s also one of the most important rules of bulletproof Pinterest strategy. Unless your blog is Pinterest-friendly, you won’t get much traffic from it!
Adding Pin-it buttons to your graphics on a blog is nothing complicated. Here’s a guide to do it in Squarespace & here’s one of the plugins for WordPress.
STEP #4: Join group boards
You might have heard this suggestion already from some of your peers but it’s a huge one!
Besides vertical graphics, joining group boards is the next step that will give you all the success you need.
Here’s the thing. Pinterest group boards gather people with similar interests and let them all pin on one board. Which means you all have one follower base – all of the board followers.
Do you know where I’m going with this? That’s right! For this board, you’d have way more followers than you already do. One legit group board has from 3K to 20K (or more) followers. If you join one of these, you can pin your own blog articles to these people and they’ll forward them to others.
But be mindful! Think about others as well and don’t forget to pin other relevant posts too. Also, doņ’t spam posts that are not relevant to the group board topic.
Group boards are the best (and fastest) way to get your content shared. Besides that, there are tons of various topics covered across different Pinterest group boards. Make sure to research what matters to you!
However, remember to join only relevant and active boards, and always follow the stats to see which boards pay off and which doesn’t!
STEP #5: Use Tailwind tribes
Tailwind is an amazing Pinterest scheduling tool that’s not only very convenient in its user interface but also an amazing asset for your business with Tailwind Tribes!
Tailwind Tribes work in a very similar manner as previously mentioned group boards do – you join a tribe where there are other pinners in your field, you all share your blog posts and reach out to a bigger audience. WHICH MEANS MORE TRAFFIC. Yay!
Get a month of Tailwind for free.
STEP #6: Share, share, share
Sharing is caring and Pinterest knows it the best! The average number for “success” is at least 20-30 pins per day.
Here are a few things to remember regarding sharing posts:
- It’s important to share fresh and relevant content from your blog. If you don’t have any new posts now, create new graphics for old posts and reshare.
- One “share” is one new pin to one board. You can pin the same pin on several various boards.
- When you repin from others, make sure to choose Popular and well-written content. In Tailwind, you can see share numbers when scrolling through Tribes and it makes it easier to share great content.
Don’t be afraid to pin the same pins repeatedly!
If you don’t want to pin manually, you can use TailwindApp where you can schedule your pins for the whole month and it’d take no more than half an hour of your time!
STEP #7: Follow others
Ok, this is a no-brainer. You’ll get no Pinterest followers if you won’t be following others. But! Pinterest doesn’t need oh so popular “follow-unfollow” scheme. You just have to follow people you’re interested in to get more pins to share and to get more information you might be interested in, here’s that!
Follow others not to boost your numbers but to show your support and increase the number of your online friends!
- This Bulletproof Pinterest strategy works if you put in a dedicated effort
- Research the most popular Pinterest graphics and create 2-3 options for yourself based on the most common principles;
- Join group boards to reach out to more people even if you don’t have many Pinterest followers yourself;
- Pin regularly and share other content as well;
- Use TailwindApp to save tons of your time;
- Repin popular pins;
- Follow others to get more interesting information to share and read on your own!
